The importance of learning Tajwid
The importance of Tajwid cannot be adequately described with only a few words.
Allah swt mentions in the Qur’an: “And recite the Qur’an with measures.” [73:4]
Meaning, recite it slowly, for that will help in understanding the Qur’an and contemplating it. This is how the Prophet s.a.w. used to recite. [Tafseer Ibn Katheer vol-4, p-]
Aisha R.A said, “He (the Prophet s.a.w used to recite the chapter slowly, so much so that it would be longer than chapters that were actually longer than it.” [Sahih Muslim-733]
Therefore, these proves the recommendation of slow rhythmic recitation and beatification of the voice while reciting it. For example, the Hadith which states, “Beautify the Quran with your voices.” [Sunan Abu Dawud; 1468]
And the Hadith, “He is not of us who does not chant nicely with the recitation of the Quran.” [Sunan Abu Dawud; 1469]
And the Hadith “Verily, he has been given this windpipe from the windpipes of the family of Dawud A.S. Refering to Abu Musa R.A. Abu Musa R.A replied, “If I knew that you had been listening to my recitation, I would have truly beautified it for you.” [Sunan An Nasai; 1021, Ahmed-24097]
In another place, Allah swt says: “And with measure have We revealed it (the Qur’an).”
In a Hadith that has been narrated:
“Allah desires that the Qur’an be recited in the manner it was revealed.”
It is required to recite the Qur’an using Tajwid since it was revealed with Tajwid. We are also conscious that Allah (swt) has obligated us to learn Tajwid since, without it, we would be unable to recite the Quran in Tajwid. If we fail to do this, we run the risk of committing sin, especially if we are negligent since it’s reported that many of individuals recite the Quran although it curses them.
